I’ve been having quite a few days lately where I’ve felt overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by the day, by the tasks I need to complete, by the goals I have in my mind and on paper. It can all feel so far out of reach that in the current moment, I debate shutting down and doing nothing at all.
Do y’all ever find that the more we think about what we have to do, the less we do? That happens to me when I get overwhelmed. It’s like I allow this invisible weight to leave me momentarily paralyzed.
When I have these moments, I keep going back to some advice a friend of mine gave me several weeks ago.
“Just do the next right thing.”
The next right thing, as small as it may seem. What a relief. We don’t have to solve all of life’s problems in a single moment.
When life feels too hard to handle, when you feel frozen by the sheer amount of choices presented to you… Take a moment to breathe, and ask yourself, “what is the very next right thing to do?” It can be as small as putting your phone down and getting ready for the day. Maybe it looks like committing to 20 minutes of uninterrupted work. Maybe it looks like feeding yourself a good meal while you quiet your mind.
Whatever it is, do the next right thing. Spend a few hours utilizing that thought process, and my guess is you’ll finish out your day much further along than if you had allowed internal thoughts to convince yourself that you’re not capable. Because you absolutely are.
